Ailsa Mainwaring studied on the Opera Course at the Guildhall School, having completed her Masters at the Royal Academy of Music. She graduated from Guildhall with the Harold Rosenthal prize for achievement in 2015. Ailsa studies with mezzo soprano Caitlin Hulcup.
Ailsa has appeared as Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Filippyevna (Eugene Onegin) as a young artist and cover at Garsington Opera. In spring 2018 Ailsa will perform the role of Olga (Eugene Onegin) for Mid Wales Opera, while in December she will play Mercédès (Carmen) for Ormond Opera.
Ailsa’s dedication to contemporary music has seen her perform the title role in Hans Werner Henze’s 2007 opera Phaedra (Guildhall Opera 2015), and work closely with composers including Jonathan Dove and Stephen McNeff. Other performances at the Guildhall include the world premiere of Malcolm Arnold’s The Dancing Master, the Song of the Wood Dove from Schoenberg’s Gurre Lieder, and various roles in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges (Ravel) and The Adventures of Pinocchio (Dove).
Notable appearances include Dorabella (Così fan Tutte) at the King’s Head Islington and at the Frome Festival, Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) for Heritage Opera, Dog / Woodpecker in The Cunning Little Vixen for British Youth Opera, and solos for Wexford Festival Opera.
