Soprano Alys Roberts from Rhoslan in North Wales is a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Music Opera school. Alys started singing in the Welsh folk tradition, singing Cerdd Dant and folk song in Eisteddfodau across Wales from a young age. She was a Vice Chancellor's Scholar for music at Durham University where she read English and then went on to study MA Vocal Performance at the Royal Academy of Music where she learned with Mary Nelson and Ingrid Surgenor. With RAO Alys performed the roles of Eurydice in Offenbach's Orphee aux Enfers, Barbarina in Mozart’s Le Nozze Di Figaro, Panocha in Rimsky-Korsakov's May Night. Amore and Damigella in Monteverdi'sPoppea, and Vixen in Janáček’s Příhody lišky Bystroušky.
Alys has worked with WNO in their Welsh Language oratorio Gair ar Gnawd by Pwyll ap Sion and will be appearing as ‘the Muse’ in WNO’s new commission opera-film Hedd Wyn by Stephen McNeff in the spring of 2018. Last season Alys sang ‘Sopranino’ in Opera Holland Park’s production of Puccini’s La Rondine and Tweedle Dee’ in their Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Will Todd. She also created the roles of Fan and Tiny Tim in OHP’s new commision A Christmas Carol by Will Todd and David Simpatico which was premiered at Christmas. Alys is very excited to be debuting Pop Up Opera appearing as Sandman and the Dewfairy, and is thrilled to be returning again to sing the role of Bastienne in their production of Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne this summer.
