James Schouten

High baritone James Schouten trained originally as a violinist, changing his focus to work primarily as a classical singer under the tutelage of Nan Christie at Goldsmiths where he completed his Bachelors in Music in 2013. On the opera circuit, James has performed in roles such as Schaunard La Boheme (Opera Gold, 2011), Demetrius A Midsummer Nights’ Dream (Opera Gold, 2013), Angelotti Tosca (Surrey Opera, 2014), Harlekin Ariadne auf Naxos (Queen’s Opera, 2014), Papageno Die Zauberflöte (Woodhouse Opera, 2014), Escamillo Carmen (Barefoot Opera, 2014), Figaro Le nozze di Figaro (Opera UpClose, 2014), Don Giovanni Don Giovanni (Opus Opera, 2015), Marcello La Boheme (Dulwich Opera Company, 2015), Eisenstein Die Fledermaus (Opera Gold, 2015), Baron Douphol La Traviata (Euphonia, 2016) and Silvio Pagliacci (Hampstead Garden Opera, 2016). He also recently premiered in David Earl’s Strange Ghost as iconic poet Rupert Brooke to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death. James has been performing and writing in the London scene since 2008; he is currently involved with several rock and cross-over projects primarily as orchestrator and musical director.
