This beautiful historic house in Much Marcle, Herefordshire, is a living monument to much of England’s history. It remains a home and not a museum although it contains a wealth of period furnishings, paintings and decorations. The family trust which runs Hellens, and her sister property Southside House, serves both the community and the general public, particularly in the field of education. The trust works to provide historical, musical, environmental, and literary projects and activities, for schools and students of all ages, through the two properties.
The Opera will be staged in the sixteenth century Great Barn at Hellens Manor. The oldest part dates from Tudor times in the 16th century when Sir Richard Walwyn was Lord of the Manor. Sir Richard was Knighted by Queen Mary and pardoned by Queen Elizabeth! The Barn has been sensitively restored to reveal a fine ‘Great Hall’ fit for banqueting, theatre, recitals and all manner of events. The large windows overlook a peaceful old cider orchard.
