Venue Information

Venue Description:
In June 1837 a local entrepreneur opened the 'Hippadrome' - a race course- in the Notting Hill area, using the hill now occupied by St John's Church as a natural grandstand. By June 1841 the race course had failed and was to be replaced by a housing development, with a church on the top of the hill as a centrepiece of what would become the Ladbroke Estate.
Designed in the Early English Style, St John's Church was built in 1845 to accommodate 1,500 worshippers. This year it will house events as part of the Notting Hill Mayfest, a fantastic, diverse London arts festival.
