Venue Information

Venue Description:
This fundraiser is beautifully named 'Let there be Light' to raise money to renovate the Harting’s Church of St Mary & St Gabriel. This is one the finest examples of a 13th century church in southern England, nestling at the foot of the Sussex South Down, with its unique copper spire, weathered green over centuries making it a famous landmark from miles around. Today this church is at the centre of a vibrant village community, providing a timeless space for Christian prayer and worship, but the present lighting is old and of poor quality, casting inadequate light onto the church-goers, and even plunging some areas of the church into complete darkness.
The church has stood here for 800 years, and there’s no reason why it should not be here for another 800 years. But they must keep it fit for purpose, and, to this end, attractive, modern and efficient lighting must play its part.

Now they have an opportunity to enhance the mood of the interior with some stunning modern lighting with a world-class lighting designer, Alexander Stileman. His plan for lighting inside this church is truly inspiring: it will provide not only a most attractive and appropriate ambience for the church, but it will also be energy-efficient with dramatically lower running costs for the future.
The total cost of the project, including design, materials and installation, is £55,000, (Alexander has waived his design and supervisory fee, for which we are most grateful).

It is their intention to fund this project entirely from voluntary donations, and are hoping that this show will help get them one step closer to those improvements.
